Joan E. Hegerty, 72

Joan Elizabeth Ullrich Hegerty, 72, of Albuquerque, NM died on February 19, 2012 after battling complications from several hip surgeries. She was born in Warren Pa. to the late Joseph and Mary Sowa Ullrich on May 30, 1939. She graduated from Warren Area High School in 1957, and then graduated from St Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1960. She was a very competent and compassionate nurse. While living in Warren, she worked at Warren General Hospital and Warren State Hospital. During her career in psychiatric nursing, she went back to school and completed her B.S. at Gannon University in May 1988. After moving to Albuquerque, NM in June 1988 she worked briefly at Anna Kaseman Hospital and then worked at Albuquerque Veterans Hospital until she retired in 2000. Joan loved to travel, enjoyed going to conferences and loved spending time near the ocean. Joan was very generous and always there to help when she was needed.

Joan is survived by her son – Michael Hegerty of Albuquerque, NM and her sister – Helen Ullrich, also of Albuquerque. Joan was a great woman and did a great job of raising her only son. She was always there for her parents and grandparents while they were alive, and she was a tremendous help to her sister throughout her life. She will be greatly missed.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am Friday, March 2, 2012 at St Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Richard J. Toohey, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in St Joseph R.C. Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are through the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc.

Andrew J. “Andy” Donick, 89

Andrew J. Donick — 5 October, 1922 – - 23 February, 2012

Andrew J.”Andy” Donick, 89, of Warren, PA, died Thursday, February 23, 2012, at his residence. Born October 5, 1922, to the late Michael and Mary Staryak Donick in Sheffield, he resided in the area his entire life.

Andy was a 1940 graduate of Sheffield High School and served in Europe as a U.S. Army Tech Sergeant during WWII. He was employed with the PA Bureau of Employment Security for forty years, retiring as the local manager in 1982.

He was a parishioner of St. Joseph R.C. Church, where he was active for over sixty years. He served as one of the very first lectors at St. Joe’s and continued in that role until long after his professional retirement.

Andrew was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a life member and Past Exulted Ruler of the Warren Elks Lodge 223, a fact well known by all who recognized the “ELK PER” on his car license plate. He was a life member of the Warren Eagles, a member of the VFW of Warren and Sheffield and the American Legion Post 135.

A man dedicated to the community, he served on the committee to help establish and build the Warren Co. Vocational Technical School. He was active in the development and leadership of the Warren County United Way. He served on the camp committee of the Warren YMCA and in countless other community organizations. He took particular pride in having assisted in the fund raising that built the St. Joseph R.C. Church on Pennsylvania Avenue and he worked tirelessly to promote St. Joseph School.

In his older years he was well known about town and enjoyed all he came in contact with.

Andrew Donick is survived by two sons – Dr. Mark Donick and his wife, Karen, of Warren, and James Donick and his wife, Caroline, of Pleasant Valley, NY; a daughter – Anne Donick and her spouse, Sara Ford, of Lewes, DE.; a daughter-in-law Janet Donick of Scotland, MD; two brothers – George Donick of Cranford, NJ and Paul Donick and his wife, Yvonne, of Escondido CA; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Splain Donick on November 13, 1979. They were married April 26, 1947 in Oil City, PA. Andrew was also preceded in death by a son – Andrew Joseph Donick, Jr. on October 8, 2005; brothers – Michael and John Donick; a sister – Mary Ann Croman; and his long-time companion – Mary Christy, who shared his life for 20 years.

Duane Avery, 79

Duane Avery, 79 1/2 , of Warren, PA. died Thursday morning, February 23, 2012 at 3:50 A.M. at Warren General Hospital after a brief illness. He was born September 21, 1932 in Ridgway, PA. to the late Gerald and Ellen Nelson Avery. Duane has been a Warren area resident since 1957. He was a 1952 graduate of Ridgway High School and had served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a Private First Class. He was employed with the former Lorangers for 10 years and with the former G.T.E. Sylvania as a Mold Maker for 27 1/2 years retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America, Kinzua Kar Club, he enjoyed and owned his 1929 Pontiac and a 1967 Pontiac GTO.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marlene E. Kemmer Avery whom he married September 9, 1961 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Ridgway, PA., 2 Daughters – Lisa Mack of Panama City Beach, FL., Chris Morrison and husband, Bruce of Pittsfield, PA., 1 Brother – Max Avery and wife, Naomi Jean of Ridgway, PA., 4 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Richard E. Hulings, 61

Richard E. Hulings, 61, of Warren, PA. died Friday evening, February 17, 2012 in Nashville, TN. He was born January 6, 1951 in Warren, PA. to the late Lee and Elizabeth Kayne Hulings, II. He was a graduate of Warren Area High School Class of 1970. Richard was employed in the custodial department with the Warren County School District after 20 years service.

He is survived by his brother, Lee E. Hulings of Nashville, TN. 1 Sister – Karen Godfrey of Philadelphia, PA.

Arlene Peterson Hornstrom, 89

Arlene Peterson Hornstrom, 89, a resident of the Warren Manor Nursing Home died at her residence on Thursday, February 16, 2012 after an extended illness. She was born March 31, 1922 in Warren, PA. to the late Elmer D. and Jennie S. Fredrickson Peterson. Arlene was a Warren area resident her entire life and was a 1940 graduate of Warren High School. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Birthday Club and was an avid baker.

Arlene is survived by her two daughters – Julie Husted and husband, John of Buffalo, N.Y., Beth Zdarko of Bakersfield, CA. 1 Brother – Laverne E. Peterson of Indianapolis, Indiana, 8 Grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John “Victor” Hornstrom whom she married May 14, 1949 in Warren, who died September 7, 1978, 1 Son – John A. Hornstrom who died September 7, 2007, 1 Sister – Helen E. Peterson, 1 Brother – Gilbert D. Peterson.

Clyde J. Brown, 81

Clyde J. Brown, 81, of Warren, PA. died Wednesday evening, February 15, 2012 at the Warren Manor Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was born January 24, 1931 in Warren, PA. to the late Donald L. and Twila Maze Brown. He was a lifelong resident of Warren and was employed at the Warren State Hospital as a roofer/tinner foreman retiring in 1991 after 36 years service. He was a member of Holy Redeemer R.C. Church. Clyde was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and gardener.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bettie L. Williams Brown whom he married October 28, 1950 in Warren, PA., 2 Sons – James M. Brown and wife, Debbie, David A. Brown and wife, Alice, 1 Daughter – Julie L. Brown, 2 Brothers – Merle C. “Tony” Brown and wife, Janette, Larry Brown and wife, Joyce, 2 Sisters – Helen Riest, Shirley Hawley and husband, Albert all of Warren, PA.,

3 Grandsons, 2 Step Grandchildren, 1 Great Grandson, 1 Great Granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.

Virgil K. Albaugh, 84

Virgil K. Albaugh, 84, of Russell, Pa. died Tuesday evening, February 14, 2012 in his residence following a brief illness. Born August 8, 1927 in Watson Township, Pa. to the late Ernest and Edith Weller Albaugh, he was a lifelong resident of the Warren area. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy. Virgil was employed 34 years with National Fuel Company before retiring in 1994 as district manager. He was an avid hunter who loved the outdoors and his faithful canine companion – Mia – who frequently took Virgil for walks. He enjoyed his camp and his camp buddies, abiding by the credo – “What happens at camp, stays at camp”. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were the world to him.

He is survived by his wife – Constance Corbran Albaugh, whom he married June 9, 1951 at Holy Redeemer R.C. Church; a son – Daniel K. Albaugh and his wife, F. Darlene of Russell; a daughter – Cheryl Reagle and her husband, Larry of Russell; three grandchildren – Jeffrey Young and his wife, Tara of Russell, Amanda Albaugh of Warren and Daniel M. Albaugh of Russell; two great grandchildren – Shayleigh Albaugh and Talon Kinney; and a third great grandchild – Preston Keith Young – expected in April; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings – Donald and Robert Albaugh, Betty Hinckle and Charmaine Schmader.

Virgil R. Green, 86

Virgil R. Green, 86, of Warren, PA. died Tuesday morning, February 14, 2012 at St. Vincent Health Care Center, Erie, PA.

He was born October 27, 1925 in Warren, PA. to the late Harry and Alverna Holden Green. Virgil has resided his entire life in Warren and had served in the U.S. Marine Corp. as a Corporal serving in the South Pacific and China, during World War II.

He was employed for 39 years with United Refinery Company as a supervisor, retiring in 1987. He also owned and operated numerous apartments for 25 years. Virgil was a member of St. Joseph R.C. Church. He is remembered as a strong family man who had a very kind, gentle personality. He enjoyed animals, traveling, sports especially football. In his youth, he was a good athlete, played football in high school and ice skated in China during the service. He and his wife, traveled extensively to the South and spent weekends in Canada. He loved landscaping, lawn work, flower gardening and completing crossword puzzles

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dolores “Dee” Barber Green whom he married July 28, 1951, 1 Daughter – Kimberly Johnson and her fiance, Darius Abbey all of Warren, PA., 1 Sister – Lucille Nicholson of Sun City, AZ., 1 Sister-in-law, Rose Mary Barber Hovanic of Warren, PA., several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 Brothers – Harry (Sonny) Green, Jr., Forest Green, 1 infant sister – Beverly Green, 2 Sisters – Dora Lobdell, June Almendinger, his in laws, Walter “Red” Hovanic, Shirley and Steve Swenko, Charles “Buddy” Barber, Dale Almendinger, George Lobdell.

George W. Cunningham, Jr., 90

George W. Cunningham,, Jr., 90, of N. Warren, PA. died Monday morning, February 13, 2012 at the Warren General Hospital after an extended illness. He was born November 5, 1921 in Erie, PA to the late George W. and Florence M. Severin Cunningham, Sr. He has resided most of his life in Warren and was a 1940 graduate of Warren High School and attended Syracuse University. He had served in the U.S. Navy Air Corp. as an aviation machinist mate 2nd class during the Second World War. After the service he was employed with the former Warren Components as production manager retiring from there after 20 years service. He was a member of St. Joseph R.C. Church and was a 4th degree member of the Warren Knights of Columbus Council, Warren Barbershoppers and had been an active member of the Warren Players Club.

He is survived by his children – Celine Jewart and husband, Al of Austin, PA., Kathleen Shattuck and husband, Rodger of N. Warren, PA., John Cunningham and wife, Valerie of Trinity, FL., William Cunningham and wife, Ruth Ann, of Perrysville, MD., David Cunningham of Michigan; 1 Sister-in-law, Jacquelyn “Jackie” Smith Cunningham of N. Warren, PA.; 6 Grandsons; 3 Great Grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years – Shirley Hilkirk Cunningham who died November 4, 2002, and he married September 23, 1950 in Warren, PA.; 1 Sister – Mary Patricia Rimer; and 1 Brother – Robert Cunningham.

Jerry L. Salsgiver, 72

Jerry L. Salsgiver, 72, of Clarendon, PA, died Tuesday afternoon, February 7, 2012 in his residence, following a three month illness. Born September 3, 1939 in Porkey, PA to the late Wilbur and Margaret Littlefield Salsgiver, he has resided in Clarendon for the last 50 years. He served as a sharpshooter and a one mile runner in the U.S. Marine Corp; he was standby during the Korean conflict and was twice called. Jerry was employed with the former Deluxe Storage in the shipping and receiving department, retiring after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Sheffield Rod and Gun Club, Clarendon VFW and the Marine Corp League – Pendleton Detachment. He was an avid hunter – a skilled marksman and reloader. Additionally, he was avid fisherman, reader, and four-wheeler. He was an fan of NASCAR; his favorite drivers were Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. He enjoyed reading and Sudoku puzzles, He taught trapping to his grandchildren and several other kids. He loved life in general. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers Fan.

He is survived by his wife, Sallie Wingard Salsgiver, whom he married October 29, 1966 in Warren, PA; five children – Tina (Mike) Nary, Kenneth Bubs (Dawn Marie) Salsgiver, Deby Guzman, Sherry (Steve) Nowell, and Tonija (Greg) Senyo; a special niece – Susan (Dave) Ward;, 2 Sisters – Shirley Dascanio, Sandra (Ted) Barber, Sister-in-law, Merle Wingard, 18 Grandchildren, 2 Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 Brother – Donald Salsgiver, 2 Brothers-in-law, Kenneth Wingard, Gus Dascanio, 1 Sister-in-law, Betty Scott.

Friends may call at the Marine Corp League, Jackson Avenue Extension, Warren, PA. on Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 3 to 7 pm. A private family service will be conducted at the convenience of the family where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Clarendon/Sheffield VFW funeral detail and U.S. Marine Corp personnel.
