Roger Harrison Johnson, 78, of Warren, PA., died peacefully, Friday afternoon, November 1, 2019 at his residence. He was born October 18, 1941 in Warren, PA. Roger was the son of the late Vernon and Helen Tirak-Gaydos Johnson. Roger was raised in Bradford, PA. until he was in the 10th grade. He had great childhood memories of playing with one of his best friends, his brother, Robert. The family then moved to Sheffield, PA., where he graduated from Sheffield High School Class of 1959. Upon graduation, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy Air Corp as an Aviation Machinist Mate. He was certified in engine maintenance of the P2V7 Airplane which flew with Patrol Squadron 11. While in the service he earned a good conduct medal, serving from June 25, 1959 to October 17, 1962 when he was honorably discharged.
After his service to his country and those he served with, he felt he could be of service to his community. He became a Police Officer with the Warren Police Department. When family came along, he felt that he needed to be direct all his energies into his family and therefore moved onto working with the Former National Forge Company. He was a superintendent for them in the Melt Forge Department, retiring in 2003 after 36 years employment. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, but especially treasured his times hunting in Ludlow, PA. with his brother, Robert and his son, Jerry.
Roger’s true passion in life, was making is son, Jerry the light of his life and if you were a friend of Jerry’s you had Rogers unconditional friendship and loyalty. He is remembered as always being a devoted father, husband and true family man.
Another snap shot of his life was times he spent at Lake Chautauqua, boating with the Werlin Family.
He was a member of the Warren Eagles Aerie.
Roger is survived by his wife of 53 years, Karen Werlin Johnson whom he married April 16, 1966 at Holy Redeemer Church, Warren, PA., 1 Son – Jerry Johnson and wife, Michelle Betts of Warren, PA., 1 Sister – Joy Nordin of Warren, PA., 1 Brother – Robert R. Johnson (Judy) of Sheffield, PA., 2 Grandchildren – Jordan and Nicholas Willetts, 1 Brother-in-law, Brad Werlin (Marcia) of Oxford, FL., 3 Sister-in-laws, Maxine Underwood (Bruce) of Jamestown, N.Y., Sally Kates (Robert) of Lakeland, FL., Roxanne Gray (Dan) of Cherry Grove, PA., his loving and faithful Labrador, LeRoy, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant twin brother to Joy, Jay Allen Johnson, his father and mother-in-laws, Bert and Ann Rock Werlin whom Roger hunted with extensively, 2 Brother-in-laws, Craig Werlin, William “Bill” Nordin.
A private family funeral service will be conducted at the convenience of the family with Rev. Mark Hecht, Pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by the Clarendon/Sheffield V.F.W. funeral honor guard and the U.S. Navy Personnel.
