Nadine Dolores (Flanders) Carlson, 85, of Warren, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday morning, November 9, 2019. Born on August 31, 1934 in Port Allegany, PA, she was the daughter of the late Walter Ernest and Irene Frances (Senzel) Flanders. Nadine worked 18 tireless years at the United Refining Company in various roles including the Payroll Department. She taught cake decorating at the Vo-Tech school and at JCC. She was famous for her beautiful cake creations, which she sold from her home for many years. Nadine had a strong faith and was a 60+ year member of Covenant United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served on the board and many committees, and, with her husband, Jerry, led the Youth Group for 10 years. She made a real and lasting impact on the lives of the church teens. She once raised money for her church by giving haircuts in her home for a quarter each. This was so popular and fun that it became a weekly social gathering for the church families! She enjoyed square dancing and card club, she volunteered for the PTO, and led a Girl Scout troop. Nadine was a second mother to all of the neighborhood and church children. She and Jerry enjoyed a life of traveling and camping. She fiercely loved her immediate family, extended family, church family, and friend/neighbor families and they loved her just as much in return. Her creativity knew no bounds, including beautiful paintings, sewing, ceramics, intricate tree ornaments, cooking, baking, and canning vegetables from her husband’s garden. She collected teacups, birdhouses, and angels. Nadine loved to entertain; her home always had “open-door” and “meal-on-the-table” policies in place. She loved spending winters in Florida with her husband and siblings and will be missed by all of her friends there. She was a fun-loving person who enjoyed games and puzzles. Nadine was a true inspiration to her five children, supporting and encouraging them to pursue higher educations and professional careers. She was a model of unconditional love, perseverance, and faith. Her impact on their lives, the lives of her grandchildren, and the lives of her great grandchildren is profound. The gift of her presence and love has been our greatest blessing.

Nadine is survived by her loving husband, Gerald “Jerry” Elwyn Carlson, whom she married on September 12, 1953 in Sawyer, PA; five children – Vicki (Emilio) Iannuccillo of Bristol, RI, Kathi (Steve) Goodwill of Warren, PA, Cindi (Bob) Reid of Erie, PA, Keith (Cathy) Carlson of Summerville, SC, and Judi (Gregg) Danielson of Warren, PA; two siblings – Elaine Chappell of Kingsport, TN, and Jim Flanders of Stanley, NC; Grandchildren – Rob Schrenk, Todd Schrenk, Maria Iannuccillo, Rita Tabraham, Lisa Philhower, Paul Goodwill, Scott Goodwill, Joel Goodwill, Emily Goodwill, Adam Reid, Thomas (Ben) Moore, Catherine Carlson, Hunter Danielson, and Morgan Danielson; great grandchildren – Haley, William, Megan, Maya, Harvey, Davina, Veronica, Ambrose, Theoden, Arthur, Solomon, and Isaac; and several cousins and many nieces, nephews, and their families.
