Hazel A. Shield, 98, a resident of Warren, PA passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at her home. She was born in Franklin, PA on March 10, 1915 to the late Clarence P. and Lucy Kane Beers. She was a lifelong Warren area resident and the valedictorian of the 1933 class of Russell High School. After spending the first part of her life helping work the family farm in Russell, PA, in later years she enjoyed her work as a cook at Beaty and Warren Area High School. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church. She had also been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Conewango Valley Country Club and the Warren Woman’s Club. Hazel enjoyed traveling, especially with her family to many places including Hungary, Hong Kong and the Netherlands. She was a committed volunteer at Warren General Hospital for over 20 years. Hazel remained an avid golfer and bridge player into her 90’s. Daily, until she died, she actively knitted scarves, recited poetry, and read. Hazel is survived by her two children, Lana Creal of Warren, PA, and Dr. Dennis E. (Reissa) Shield of Clinton, CT, five grandchildren, Marisa C. (Kurt) Smith of Warren, PA, Case C. (Adel) Creal of Seattle, WA, Dr. Drew D. Creal of Chicago, IL, Dr. Janelle (Geoff) Shield Manton of Farmington, CT and Caryn D. Shield of Burlington, VT, seven great-grandchildren, Elin C. Smith, Simon P. Smith and Gareth E. Smith, all of Warren, PA, Marco Creal and Sylvan Creal of Seattle, WA and Lila Manton and Ian Manton of Farmington, CT, two nephews, Raymond Shield and Timothy (Cyndi) Shield and a niece, Suzanne (Jim) Yovich, all of the Russell, PA area. In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death in 1991 by her husband, Edward Shield whom she married on December 31, 1941, five sisters, Nancy Anderson, Bertha Carlson, Mildred Shield, Helen Bidwell and Maj. Inez Beers, and one grandson Daniel Shield. Friends may call at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East Street, Warren, PA on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 10:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M. at which time funeral services will be held with Rev. Kevin Haley, Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Russell, PA. Family and friends are invited to a reception at Grace United Methodist Church following the service at 1:00 P.M.
