Edward A. Kavanaugh, 76, of Warren, PA died peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, October 25th, 2019, in the comfort of his home.
Born on August 19th, 1943 in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of the late William F. and Rosalie Gobel Kavanaugh. Edward was a graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School in Syracuse, with a scientific degree. He attended LeMoyne College where he attained a degree in the Bachelor of Arts. Edward then earned an MBA from Syracuse University.
Edward started his career as an accountant at Coopers & Lybrand in Boston, MA. Struthers Wells brought him and his small family to Warren, PA where he was an Assistant Trust Officer and Contractual Manager. He then moved onto National City Bank, where he was a Trust Officer. He retired from National City in 2002, then moved onto First Tier Bank in Jamestown, NY, where he was head of the Trust Department and retired from the formal banking business around 2005. In his retirement years, he continued to enjoy his work as a Financial Consultant managing individual estate planning; and financial investment planning for Whirley-Drinkworks Industries as a member of the Investment Committee.
Edward believed strongly in supporting the community of Warren. He gave generously of his time to many volunteer boards throughout the years which included the Warren County YMCA board and the Y Board of Trustees, the Community Foundation of Warren County, and the Finance Committee for St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was an avid supporter of St. Joseph Catholic School and a member of the Rotary Club for many years.
Edward loved the great outdoors of our community. He often enjoyed a hike on Tanbark Trail with his family and relished a long bike ride up the hills of Pleasant Township or Hatch Run Road. In bygone days, he enjoyed a competitive game of racketball or tennis, kayaking and canoeing, and more recently his social game of golf with close friends was his pastime of choice. Edward has always been an avid reader of a variety of genres, while particularly enjoying various mysteries.
Edward is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mildred “Jackie” FitzGerald Kavanaugh, whom he married on June 29th 1968 in Syracuse, NY; 3 children – Michele Sokolski and husband, Andrew, of Warren, PA; Kathleen Curren and husband, Brian of Wexford, PA and Christopher Kavanaugh and wife, Annabeth, of La Jolla, CA.
Edward’s 9 grandchildren were the light of his life: William, Sara, Edward and Joseph Sokolski, Isabel, Jack and Patrick Curren and Myles and Carter Kavanaugh.
Edward is also survived by 2 brothers: John Kavanaugh and his wife, Gretchen, of Spring Hills, FL and Richard Kavanaugh of Exeter, NH; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by a sister – Julie Kavanaugh.
Friends may call at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East St., Warren, PA, on Monday, October 28th, 2019, from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00am Tuesday, October 29th, 2019, at St. Joseph R.C. Church, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue West, Warren, PA, with Fr. Richard Tomasone, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
