Anthony Pellegrino

Anthony J. Pellegrino, 87, of Warren, PA. died surrounded by his family at his residence, Friday morning, October 5, 2012. He was born June 19, 1925 in Sheffield, PA. to the late Anthony and Angela Papalia Pellegrino. He has resided in Warren since 1960 and was formerly from Kane, PA. He was a 1943 graduate of Sheffield High School. In September 1943, he volunteered for military service and was inducted in the U.S. Army where he served as part of the 5th Army, liberating Rome. He was moved from Rome to Nancy, France where he was transferred into the the 7th Army making an amphibious landing on August 15, 1944 in Southern France. His troop continued through all of France into Germany and finally to Salsbury, Austria. He was wounded in France and awarded the Purple Heart. He also earned the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, Silver Star, Bronze Star, European Theatre Medal with ne Arrow Head and Four Battle Stars, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, The Combat Infantry Badge and the French Citation. After the service he enrolled at Buffalo State College and Edinboro State Teachers College where he obtained his business background. Tony built, owned and operated the former Warren Skating Rink, the former Lucky Strike Tavern and had worked at the former Pellegrino Grocery Store in Sheffield, PA. In 1946 he processed canned peppers in his mother’s basement, in 1970 the business had outgrown itself and he purchased the former Walker Dairy where he owned and operated Pellegrino Foods and was in a retired state but still active in operations. He was a member of Holy Redeemer R.C. Church, was a usher, served on the Stewardship Campaign and a member of the church Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Warren Knights of Columbus Council where he was a 4th degree member. Family was the center of his whole life. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Angela Zucco Pellegrino whom he married June 10, 1950 at St. Callistus R.C. Church, Kane, PA. his 5 Children – Angie Clopp and husband, Tom, Mary Ann Church and husband, David, Anthony Pellegrino and wife, Anita, Tom Pellegrino and wife, Sally all of Warren, PA., Rose Willis and husband, Mike of Carlisle, PA., 2 Sisters – Margaret Novosel of Kane, PA., Angie Pellegrino of Warren, PA., 11 Grandchildren – Tom, Michael and Greg Clopp, Angela Foote, Anthony Pellegrino IV, Alex Anthony Pellegrino, Lauren Hokamp, Edwin Willis, Joseph, Maria and Thomas Pellegrino, 2 Great Grandchildren – Jakey Clopp, Christopher Foote, several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 Sisters – Rose D’Agostino, Mary Boisseau and a infant sister – Mary Pellegrino. Friends may call at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East Street, Warren, PA. on Sunday, October 7, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. where a vigil service will be conducted Sunday at 7:45 P.M. A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Monday, October 8, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at Holy Redeemer R.C. Church, 11 Russell Street, Warren, PA. with Msgr. John Lucas, former Pastor as main celebrant and Fr. James Gutting, Pastor as concelebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph R.C. Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Sheffield/Clarendon V.F.W. funeral detail and the U.S. Army.
