Vergil F. Hulings, 78, of Warren, PA., died peacefully, Saturday evening, November 2, 2024, at Warren Manor Nursing Home, Warren, PA. He was born March 20, 1946, in Redclyffe, Forest Co., PA. He was the son of Floyd and Julia Smail Hulings. He has resided in Warren County since 1970, moving there from Marienville, PA. He was a graduate of Milton Hershey School, where he learned the trade of carpentry. Vergil had served with the U.S. Navy, during the Vietnam War, working with the Seebees, from February 1966 until his honorable discharge in October of 1970. He was employed with United Refining Company as a maintenance foreman, retiring from there after many years employment. Vergil was a member of the Warren Eagles Aerie #313. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed fishing in several anglers fishing competitions. He was an avid hunter. Vergil and his son, Mark always hunted together when Mark was growing up. They spent hours in the woods. Mark was always amazed at how fast Vergil could run when it came to tracking his deer. Vergil enjoyed many summers at the beach with his family. He didn’t love the beach, but he loved watching his wife and kids enjoying the sunshine and waves. His greatest joys in his life were spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was extremely proud of them and loved to talk about each one of them. He was known at the Warren Manor as a great storyteller, telling the staff that he was feeding the neighboring deer apples by hand.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky A. Ickert and her fiancé, Dean Westcoat of Warren, PA., 5 Grandchildren – Ashley Hulings Mayfield, Colby Hulings, Zachary, Emily, and Janey Ickert, 4 Great Grandchildren – Aiden and Nolan Mayfield, Nhiko and Greyson Hulings, 1 Brother – Floyd Hulings and wife, Joan of Warren, PA., 2 Sisters – Michael Lutz and husband, Rayme of Fryburg, PA., Phyllis Taylor of Binghamton, NY., several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Barbara “Barb” Shipe Hulings whom he married January of 1970, who died August 1, 2022, 1 Son – Mark D. Hulings who died July 27, 2015, 1 infant Sister – Hazel Jane Hulings, 1 Brother – Lloyd Hulings.
Friends and family will be received on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East Street, Warren, PA., from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 P.M. A Celebration of Vergil’s life will be held there at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Dr. Dale Haight, Officiating. Full military honors will be conducted following the Celebration of Life by members of the Clarendon/Sheffield V.F.W. and Warren American Legion Funeral Detail and the U.S. Navy personnel.
Interment will be in Redclyffe Methodist Cemetery, Forest Co., PA. It was with a great deal of regret that I learned of Vergil’s passing. I worked with him in the carpenter’s shop at United Refining for a time, and he was much fun, but also a very smart man, and a hard worker. It was a pleasure to become friends with Vergil and remain friends even after I left URC, Rest in peace,my friend,you have labored hard.
Vergil was a great guy and brother in law. He loved his family. He will be missed but us together again with his wife and son.
