Mary Dashem Walls
Mary “Mawgo” Dashem Walls, 95, passed away at 9:15 p.m. on December 23, 2012 at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice House, Warren.. She was born February 19, 1917, at the family home in Centre Hall, Centre County, Pennsylvania., the daughter of Franklin Wesley and Mary Ruth Bower Dashem. She lived on the family farm with her parents and her two daughters. In 1956, Mary , her children and parents moved to Warren, Pa. She was a graduate of Centre Hall High School with the Class of 1934.
In Warren she was a member of Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church. She worked at Metzgar-Wright, Levinson Brothers, Myers Laboratory, House of Printing, and Jamesway. She cared for elderly ladies in their homes until she was in her 80s.
She enjoyed gardening, baking, and knitting. She made afghans for friends, neighbors, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and for dozens of babies.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan (Thomas) Curtin, Clarendon; Maryjane (Charles) Getz, Millbury, Ohio; three grandchildren, Wendy Stanko, Sheffield and her fiancé, James Fitch; Janet (David) Talbott, Brownstown, Michigan; and Michael (Jackie) Getz, Livonia, Michigan; six great grandchildren, Anna and Joe Stanko, Andrew and James Talbott and Oliver and Molly Getz. She is also survived by three nieces, Linda (Alan) Sinclair, Berwyn Heights, Maryland; Patty Danyluk, Hillard, Ohio and Dorothy (Mark) Dutchess, Lebanon, Pa., as well as several great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dedicated friend and caregiver, Dr. John O’Shaney His excellent care allowed Mary to stay in her home until her recent decline.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, William Bower Dashem; one grandson, Joseph Thomas Curtin, and one niece Barbara Dashem Audiss.
Friends will be received at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East Street, Warren, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 28. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, with the Rev. Marcus Briggs, officiating. Friends may call on Monday, December 31, 2012 at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA..from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 P.M. when a committal service will be held. Dear Susie, Tom and Families, We are so sorry for your loss. Mary was a Glenwood St. resident even before we moved here and everyone got to know her quickly. Her evening walks down the street in summer with porch chats along the way. Fresh vegetables from her garden, samples of homemade soup, or freshly baked breads, or a visit to check out our garden, a wave from her porch– That was Mary. She had wisdom she shared with us and suggestions about our “crops” and flowers. Her neighbors will miss her and remember her.
