James J. Newton, 94, a resident of the Rouse Warren Co. Home Died Monday, March 4, 2013 at his residence after an extended illness. He was born March 3, 1919 in Grand Valley, PA. to the late James McCoy and Fairl Loomis Newton. He was a longtime Warren area resident and graduated from Warren High School Class of 1938. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1939 and had attained the rank of technical sergeant when he was discharged January 3, 1945, in order to accept a commission as a 2nd LT. “Infantry”. He was assigned to “General Patton’s 3rd Army”, 4th armored division and was honorably discharged November 3, 1945 after serving overseas 3 ½ years in the Pacific Theater, the South American Theater and in the European Theater of Operations, for a total of 6 ½ years service. After his military service he graduated from Bryant and Stratton Business Institute, Buffalo, N.Y. He worked as an accountant in Warren for Hammond Iron Works and successor Pittsburgh Desmoines Steel Co. and for Dorcon, Inc. He retired in 1986 from Blackstone Corp., Jamestown, N.Y. where he was employed for 17 years as Senior Accountant. He was a past member of the Warren Jamestown Chapter of Accountants, The Warren Veterans of Foreign Wars, Warren American Legion Post 135. He was a member of Holy Redeemer R.C. Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent most of his spare time enjoying his hobby producing and selling charcoal at his home between Warren and Scandia. He is survived by his 5 Children – James M. Newton and wife, Vivian, John D. Newton and wife, Diane, Jay W. Newton and companion, Wendy Dickey, Jena L. Newton and her fiancé, Rick Ackley, all of Warren, PA. , Jeffrey L. Newton and wife, Sharon of Bristol, Conn., 1 Brother – William “Bill” Newton of Hershey, PA., 9 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Glotz Newton whom he married August 24, 1946 in Tidioute, PA., who died July 24, 2000, 1 infant son at birth, 1 Sister Helen Dahl. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 12:00 PM with Fr. James Gutting, Pastor, officiating, assisted by Deacon Joseph Lucia. Interment will be in St. Joseph R.C. Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Sheffield/Clarendon V.F.W. Funeral Detail and the U.S. Army Personnel.
